The Sixth Station -- Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus
And thy mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life. Ps. 22:6
What tender grace in Veronica’s act!
Before her Romans and rabble would part
As she drew close to Christ, strength in her heart.
He was tormented, dying, all help lacked,
Before her eyes – how, how could she react?
She wiped the Lord’s face without any art:
What mercy and love her hands could impart.
He went on, but – there – Jesus impressed a pact.
Amongst artists how many imitate
Veronica’s art of true devotion?
The veil’s image no genius can create
Showing the Lord's image and reflection.
Veronica’s heart and Our Lord's face, both
Left his indelible grace on a cloth.
