The Burden

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;
  for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
 and you will find rest for your souls.
 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
                                                            Matthew 11:29-30.

How can I believe Your burden is light,
  Weighed down and fraught with never-ending cares?
  A saint with You, I know, everything shares.
How weak is my faith—against You I fight,
Bucking your yoke, turning where it seems right,
  Not where You would lead me, but into snares
  For the proud and impetuous—the lairs
Of false comfort, wherein we blind our sight.

To see with a saint’s humble eyes and will,
 Avoiding the devil’s sound and fury,
  Abiding in simple needs’ abundance—
Here, Lord, I resign my reins.  Please, instill
 A new will in my heart, free from worry,
  Rejoicing in—all in all—Your Presence.
