Straight and True

“Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;
anything more than this comes from evil.”
                               Matthew 5:37

Lord, you want my speech to be straight and true:
  “Yes” when I agree; “No” when I do not.
  Then–yes–a sinful nature is my lot
And my words twist and strain, even with You.
Lord, thank you for Your Light, to which I hew
  And wonder if my poems are but a blot
  Of sin in Your Book?  Please, unloose this knot!
Even so, I see: I must grow anew.

Each to a labor is called: laboring
 We can fathom our inadequacy
  And our desperate need of Your wisdom;
So again I have labored, adoring,
 Aware so sorely of my infancy –
  Grateful I may pray that Your Kingdom come.
