Judge Not
“Judge not, that you be not judged.”
Matthew 7:1
Why do we separate sheep from goats,
Judging one man sinful, another good?
Why on others’ faults do we always brood—
Ignoring in ourselves the teeming motes?
Such judgment in itself our death denotes.
For has not He who has become our food
Undergone death and washed us in His blood?
Do we think our judgment the Judge not notes?
Kind Lord, Gentle Jesus, I shall not judge,
But cast my eyes on You when I suffer,
When I am harmed by anyone’s desire.
I will then be cleansed from every smudge
And, at last, my hope and faith shall buffer
Your final, swift, terrible wrath and fire.
